I started my 100 skyscape painting challenge this week and below are the the first three completed paintings. I am trying to complete one every day but only four days in and I already skipped a day, I just could not get my painting on the third day completed. I feel a bit more organized today and think next week will be a bit easier to complete a painting each day, but if not that is ok too. I am in this to establish a regular painting schedule and improve my paintings of skies and clouds.

I painted this lovely tiger for a critique session with Robert Bateman at a six day workshop I recently attended. There were plenty of tips shared and the critique sessions helped me immensely. I feel so very lucky to have had the opportunity to spend that much time with someone I admire and respect who continues to have an amazing career and life while leaving a legacy and great example to follow in so many ways.
I have been working on some fantasy type art for the past 6 months and have really been enjoying the freedom of painting in this style. I think in this fast paced world, escaping to one of these islands seems like a nice reprieve.

I really enjoy painting and have pretty much always painted in a realistic style but a couple of years ago I was introduced to intuitive painting. I have never been so happy or free while painting as I am when I paint intuitively. It is very liberating to smear, dab, spray and let paint run with not much though to an outcome or how much the paint or canvas cost (this canvas is 4 feet x 4 feet and cost me $16 to make). Just pick a colour and a spot and let it fly!

I have had a few "failures" while painting intuitively but you know,,,, I just gessoed over top and started a new one, cost maybe a dollar or two, price of a cup of coffee at most. I am not sure I always learn something when I paint this way but then again, for me it is more about the moment and the feeling than what is left on the canvass. That is the hard part, allowing any outcome and not judging it good or bad but more so how it felt, did you loose yourself in the process, were you able to relax and unwind?

For me it is always more about the energy that I want to communicate onto the canvas with paint, hard and soft edges, gradations and sudden colour changes. Contrasts in colour and colour harmony, it is all so interesting how it flows together and to just let go of what we think painting is or should be and just allow it to be whatever you need or want it to be.

I am gearing up to teach some workshops locally in the new year and plan also to have some online tutorials and meet ups to go over some of the techniques and ways to prepare to be able to just let go and leave the rules checked at the door. Instead to tap into intuition and allow it to flow and dominate the painting session.

The only close up pic I have with my sweet grandson who loves to paint with his Nana.
I am turning a few sketches into pdf colouring pages, I thought if people can benefit from the mindfulness of colouring why not. It also give me some subjects to hone my inking and illustrations skills.
I just finished an owl study, my first attempt with prismacolor coloured pencils. I really liked using all the different greys instead of shading with graphite.

I did not plan this painting but as it developed I tried to keep colour to a min except to accentuate certain aspects. For example the bit of blue sky peeking through and the vegetation on the island,
both symbolizing hope. Hope you enjoy it. SOLD

This was a lot of fun but I did find it difficult. I did follow a computer generated tutorial to get most of this blocked in, in my sketch book. If your interested I am posting almost every day on Instagram and I really like how easy it is and the interaction with other is a awesome feature. I have been working on some fantasy type art for the past 6 months and have really been enjoying the freedom of painting in this style. I think in this fast paced world, escaping to one of these islands seems like a nice reprieve.

This is one of the few paintings I made time for this summer. Pretty sad that painting is something I love to do but I have not been disciplined enough to make it a regular practice. I am working at replacing some not so productive habits with some regularly scheduled painting time and see what I can produce

Well I did not feel like painting, so I got out my coloured pencils and fine point marker and went to town in my sketch book. I really enjoyed getting lost in the meditative and slightly mundane actions of cross hatching and shading.

Some times getting started on a painting seems like a huge chore but picking up my sketch book and a couple of coloured pencils feels more light hearted and not quite so daunting.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5753163520158198279.post-50091478168654134592012-02-28T06:30:00.000-08:002012-02-28T06:30:36.438-08:00Red Pepper

This is the first semi successful painting I've worked on since this fall. I have not done myself any favours by not painting regularly and I will be dedicating part of my day hopfully everyday to painting.

This red pepper was all done in acrylic but I would like to go in with a touch of oils here and there where I had trouble blending the colours. I love the way oils feel and the natural glow that comes from them but it seems a tad bit easier to jump into a painting session with acrylic, I think it's because I am more familiar with them and they dry so quickly that I can apply glazes and build up the painting quicker.

Anyway now that I have a game plan lets see how well I can stick to it!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5753163520158198279.post-21143764950881091092011-10-23T20:31:00.000-07:002011-10-23T20:31:59.701-07:0010 Minute Pears

This is my response to the Daily Paintworks weekly challenge, to set a 10 minute timer and paint what you can in that time. I had a lot of fun with this challenge and learned a lot too! I will admit that three of the pears were over the 10 minutes, but not more than 5-7 extra minutes and usually for the background and shadow.

A very worthwhile exercise and I hope to remember to practice this again.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5753163520158198279.post-10655874258971734942011-10-10T22:24:00.000-07:002011-10-10T22:24:34.290-07:00October Pears

I had a flat of pears given to me by my neighbor and upon my daughters suggestion, painted a bowl of them. This painting was a little more complicated than most of my still life set ups up till now. I was quite happy that I was able to paint all the pears in the bowl with just a quick sketch in an under painting. This photo turned out a little darker than the original and I hope to find the time tomorrow to correct it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5753163520158198279.post-29658363159851626312011-09-14T20:15:00.000-07:002011-09-14T20:15:37.955-07:00Tofino Beach Value Study

This was my response to the Daily Paintworks Challenge this week. I sure enjoyed leaving colour out of the equation, as this photo is one I've wanted to paint for sometime but the colours in this sunset were a little intimidating. Now that I've done the value study I feel a little more confident about approaching this in colour.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5753163520158198279.post-25729160819414347462011-09-06T21:26:00.000-07:002011-09-08T21:06:40.880-07:00Tin Wis - Calm Waters

I painted this in response to one of the Daily Paintworks Challenges, painting with only rectangles and each being a different colour. I did not submit it to the challenge as I didn't really follow the rules all that well:)

I really enjoyed painting with a different technique. I have wanted to paint some of these photo's for a couple of years but kept putting it off as the colours that inspired me also intimidated me. I am quite happy with quite a few areas on this little painting and will probably touch up a few once dry enough.

This painting was painted from a photo my husband took while staying at Tin Wis Resort in Tofino, BC, Tin Wis means "calm waters".Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5753163520158198279.post-55540380887733223772011-07-25T08:58:00.000-07:002011-08-18T09:13:50.564-07:00One Tree
<img border="0" height="185" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibM9kQ8IG4hxaa-ocKWxbUqYzMfiPgC5ENHTSqqrj6p5fCDXyn-XdXBd5DxO-G5TXQxMepQ8z53Dtiug3oatuIdi_mvqhEa4sRDVPkR8B_kUzwOc8fqi6r60C1fxSbiN8itRDgpVr0wNQ/s320/blured+tree.jpg" t$="true" width="320" />

I was painting last night to some music (One Tree by Mishka) for the Daily Paintworks Challenge and this little tree popped out. It still needs some TLC once it's dried a bit, I really loved the soft colours and edges and the calm mood.

I used Winsor Newton w/s oils and they are terrific, very soft and buttery and do not seperate or get gummy when you thin with water. The other w/s oils that I have painted with are very sticky and don't accept much water to thin them out before they start to gum up and seperate.
There seems to be alot of debris that got mixed into this painting, I was using a old wash cloth to wipe my brushes as I had run out of my blue disposable shop towel that are so handy to have around, so I'll have to try to pick that out!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5753163520158198279.post-89159391667845129472011-06-28T22:30:00.000-07:002011-06-29T19:19:48.432-07:00Coin

<img border="0" height="247" i$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik7HHzJ3hLjOU8y1IyYux6xe3Yyp3fnBtNkqdA9SsCyuW_WjEw_ZUIq3H17PcEKzxBzG4Bngn6rVLjYwDPlZBml9YW-rxg89UWHP59iuSm8K8reIkB4nOJ8o9fluS9Jx3lBt8Mi0rCckc/s320/Iching+Coin.jpg" width="320" />

I did not have a lot of spare time tonight so I just did a quick little study of the coin, only had about 20 mins or so but it was fun.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5753163520158198279.post-27676183206455374962011-06-25T18:59:00.000-07:002011-06-25T18:59:31.545-07:00Good morning Marble
<img border="0" height="310" i$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH7Y3fzbbvOp7nbBYUolt8FnbDq75atgW-nTXtU9cKrjXt_P1ZzafqoILB5pi_A8Pun9Uc9QziDgKJlmilW6R3fJTuop0oUlzOwei4n3rlSpoD6o3Pxlc4Nox8ZofwOI_FC0p6LWtBZW4/s320/Marble.jpg" width="320" />
I jumped right into this painting this morning before I even got dressed, thus the title:) I love Saturdays, a nice change from the 9-5 Monday thru Friday!

This is my first complete start to finish oil paint only painting (at least that I can remember). I have been playing with oils for about three months now on and off again (mostly off) I usually block it all in with acrylic first as I find it difficult to not make the colours into "mud". This marble isn't the greatest, I had a few areas that started to get muddy on me and I will be working on them once this paint is dry, sure is fun to work with oils as they are very forgiving.

I used Lucas water soluable oils and I find that when I use water to thin the paint it starts to gum up so I bought some Liquin and that worked just great, a little harder to clean up though. I just used some linseed oil to get most of the Liquin/paint off and then Murphy's oil soap for the final clean up. I placed an order yesterday for some Winsor Newton w/s oils and can hardly wait to try them, I also ordered some walnut oil alklyd from M. Graham and Winsor Newton slow dry medium for acrylics, I have alot of materials to play with......just need to schedule the time in.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5753163520158198279.post-37992939612240118052011-06-04T22:06:00.000-07:002011-06-04T22:06:33.876-07:00Ancient Artists

I always find it exciting to find these spots just from some vague directions from a map, this one was quite neat as there was a small cave with pictographs inside and it took some investigating to find it. I have always been intrigued with cave art, it's interesting to see through out the ages there have always been individuals that feel compelled to make marks. I would like to research this a bit more as we go from cave art to graffiti is there really a difference, other than the fact that graffiti is usually on someone else's property. No painting for me today, too busy playing around, maybe tomorrow:)
